WHEN YOU WANT TO QUIT: How Ordinary Life Becomes Extraordinary

Thirty years ago, I almost quit my day job.

"Jesus, please help me. I don't think I can do this anymore."

For a girl who enjoyed instant results, staying home with growing children required divine intervention.

Most jobs give us a paycheck. However, God's call will ask for more, more, more.

"Mommy! Can I have another peanut butter and jelly? Mommy! I spilled my milk! Mommy? I missed the potty."

When what we bring to the table doesn't feel like enough, we question God's calling. But He promises a return on our investment that outweighs any pain.

In our hard seasons, we must remember:

Satan wants us to quit our day jobs—those ordinary callings that feel like too much and seem to matter too little.

The devil wants us to look for the easy button instead of faithfully walking it out with God.

Because it's in the monotonous coming and going, washing and drying, scrubbing and wiping that we experience Jesus in everyday life.

Little faithful steps of obedience usher us into extraordinary miracles.

Recently, surrounded by giggling grandbabies, I saw the living proof.

Jesus chooses people doing everyday, ordinary things to accomplish the divine. We see this in His first miracle, turning water into wine.

"Jesus said to the servants, 'Fill the jars with water'; so they filled them to the brim." (John 2:7)

There were no spigots nearby, just six empty 20-30 gallon jars to be filled.

"To the brim" sounds easy, but it must have been hard.

How many times did they travel back and forth, wearing a path from the source to the mission?

Just when they thought they'd done enough, they heard the crowd shout, "More! We need more!"

Pressure mounted with every step.

Jesus could have carved a shortcut or produced a spring. Instead, He chose to use the servants' obedience so they could be part of a miracle.

What if they had quit their "day job?" The miracle would have happened, but they would have missed the opportunity to see Jesus at work.

So whatever Jesus has asked you to do, do it faithfully in His power.

Don't quit your calling.

Keep going until you witness the miracle God has in store for you.

I'm so glad I didn’t quit my day job.

God didn't give me an instant miracle, but gave me the strength for every step.

He walked with me through good and bad times, allowing me to see His faithfulness all the way.

When we walk with Him, ordinary water turns into extraordinary wine.

And our monotony will become a miracle.
