THAT SONG STUCK IN YOUR HEAD: Finding Peace When Life Demands MORE

Overwhelmed by everyone needing MORE, MORE, MORE? For peace, try praising the LORD.

"Hallelujah! Praise ye the Lord!" My grandbaby belts out a praise tune from the backseat.

"I know all the LORD songs," she informs me.

"You sure do, sweetie," I say.

She begins another song. "The LORD we get together, together, together. The LORD we get together how happy we'll be."

"It's not the LORD! It's the MORE!" Her sister corrects her. "The MORE we get together, together, together. The MORE we get together how happy we'll be.*”

I try to referee. "Well, you can sing it either way…"

"NO! You can't!" Big sister protests. "The LORD makes no sense!"

Little sister begins to cry.

Most days, I want to cry too.

Because I can't simply swap out the MORE in life with the LORD of my life. It feels like a stretch.

The MORE of this world sounds too familiar. It's the song stuck in our head.

MORE worries.

MORE stress.

MORE needs.

MORE tasks.

MORE places we must be.

"Trust in the LORD," we say to each other in the church pews.

But how do we keep from changing our tune when we step outside church doors and encounter MORE problems?

This same struggle between MORE and LORD has echoed through generations of God's people.

Before David became King, he was a shepherd boy who knew all the LORD songs.

When life threw MORE and MORE at him, David kept singing even when it didn't make sense.

Maybe that's why Psalms, a book of LORD songs, has the most chapters of any book in the Bible.

David penned this LORD song as MORE trouble surrounded him:

The LORD protects and defends me; I trust in him. He gives me help and makes me glad; I praise him with joyful songs. (Ps 28:7)

When you're overwhelmed, don't be ashamed. Tell Jesus all about it. Then, start singing to the LORD.

We demonstrate our trust in the LORD one shaky note at a time until we learn the new melody. It sounds funny at first, but keep focusing on the LORD in the middle of the MORE.

Soon, you'll be singing a new song.

The LORD is my Shepherd. I shall not want.

The LORD is my Peace. I shall not fear.

The LORD is my Rock. I shall not be moved.

The LORD is my strength and my song. He has become my Salvation.

The LORD songs will never make sense to some people, but don't stop singing.

As soon as the MORE begins to blare in your head, choose to change the station to the LORD songs.

Throw up your hands to God, singing, "Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Praise ye the Lord" again and again and again.

It’s true. You can sing it either way.

But the MORE you sing to the LORD, the happier you'll be.
