EVERY GRANDMA’S PRAYER LIST AFTER A SLEEPOVER

I tiptoed out into the living room, my three-year-old grandbaby still asleep after our sleepover.

“I'm not as young as I used to be,” I sighed, dropping to my knees.

We had big plans for the day — pancakes and an uphill wagon trip to the park. I needed the kind of fuel coffee can't provide.

“Lord, I need You. Your strength. Your wisdom. Your light. Your life.”

(Basically, every grandma's prayer list after a restless night.)

Before I could reach for my Bible, I heard the patter of little feet announcing that the day had officially begun.

Ready or not.

Was the sun even up yet? I lifted the shade to see. My mouth dropped open.

“Look! Oh, Honey, look! Do you see them? Do you see them?”

Little Miss plastered her face against the window. “What? What?”

“God's new mercies! Look! There they are! Thank You, Jesus!”

Sweeping clouds of pink, orange, and purple escorting the sun into a new day. Brand-new mercy delivered right before our eyes.

“Yay! God’s new mercies!“ She bounced off the couch, arms raised in joy. Her enthusiasm was contagious, so we did a little jig right there in our polka dot PJs.

God's faithfulness is worth celebrating.

Because some days require more than we've got. We're fresh out of ideas. We're short on time. Weary and heavy-laden, still we're called to rise.

Fear not, you can trust God to deliver exactly what you need right on time.

Suddenly, Little Miss pointed to the bookshelf. “Quick! Get the Book!”

“The book?” I scanned the titles for a clue — a llama in pajamas, a cat in a hat. I didn't recall a book on sunrises.

My smart girl ran over and retrieved my Bible. “THE BOOK! “ She handed it to me.

“Oh, THAT Book!” I laughed.

I opened to Lamentations, God's Word penned through Jeremiah when his heart was pierced, his future demolished, and all his strength was gone. Yet somehow, he managed to hope again.

What drew his eyes above the pain?

I wonder if God sent him a sunrise to break bright over what looked like a wasted life.

A sunrise that reminded him that God never failed.

That every new day was a good day to live in the light.

Little Miss ran her finger over the beloved verses highlighted in pink, orange, and purple, mercy shining through our lives:

"The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness." Lamentations 3:22–23

She closed the Book with a thump, waved goodbye to the sunrise, and turned her attention to the kitchen.

Waiting for pancakes to appear, perhaps?

We may get older, but God's mercies never do. They are new every morning.

And should we ever forget, God sends sunrises and three-year olds to remind us.

Great is His faithfulness!
